Business overview

Black Forest Labs is an AI research lab building the FLUX family of generative image and video models. Its models reach users three ways: a hosted API at bfl.ai, open weights that can be downloaded, fine-tuned and run on your own infrastructure, and an enterprise licence covering both. A browser playground lets you try prompts without writing code.

The line-up covers FLUX 1.1 Pro and Pro Ultra for text-to-image generation at up to 4MP, FLUX.1 Kontext and FLUX.2 for in-context generation and editing from text plus reference images, FLUX.2 Klein for generation in under a second, and FLUX.2 Max for the highest output quality. FLUX 3 extends the family to video and audio and adds action prediction. Task-specific endpoints under FLUX Tools handle individual editing steps, and the API is built for production workloads.

The company was founded in 2024 and has its headquarters in Freiburg, Germany, with a second lab in San Francisco and a team of around 70 people. Its founding team worked on VQGAN, latent diffusion, Stable Diffusion and rectified flow transformers before FLUX. The lab positions itself as a frontier research outfit rather than a hosting company, pairing commercial API access with openly licensed models.
