Business overview

Mistral AI is an AI lab that builds large language models and the products around them. Its model line-up runs from frontier systems down to open-weight ones, and they are served through APIs and the Mistral Studio platform, with the Vibe coding agent available as a terminal CLI, as plugins for VS Code and JetBrains, on the web and on mobile.

Inference can run on Mistral's own EU-hosted infrastructure, through cloud partners including Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, SAP, IBM, Snowflake, NVIDIA and Outscale, or inside the customer's own environment, whether virtual cloud, edge or on-premises. The catalogue covers general and coding models such as Mistral Large, Medium and Small, OCR for document processing, Voxtral for audio and speech, and newer work including Shieldstral and Robostral Navigate. Most models are billed per million tokens, with batch processing at half rate, OCR per thousand pages and speech per minute. Open-weight models are Apache 2.0 licensed for research and individual use, while commercial deployments need a separate Mistral licence.

Mistral was founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix, who lead the company as CEO, chief science officer and CTO, with the stated aim of building a European AI leader around openness and cost efficiency. The company announced a EUR 3 billion round aimed at sovereign, open-weight AI and European infrastructure, and it passed its 100th employee in September 2024. It sells to organisations in finance, manufacturing, defence, energy and the public sector. List pricing runs from a free tier through $14.99 a month for Pro to $24.99 per user a month for Team, with custom enterprise deployments.

Value proposition

Inference runs on EU-hosted servers or inside your own environment, so teams under data-residency constraints can reach frontier models without sending prompts outside their jurisdiction.
