Business overview

Anytype is a local-first workspace for notes, documents, databases and chat: every object is created and encrypted on your own device with keys the user holds, and no server can read the contents. Spaces hold graph-based databases with modular views, a block-based editor, templates and widgets, and they sync peer-to-peer over a local network or through the network when needed, so the app keeps working offline.

The sync layer is Any-Sync, a CRDT-based protocol released under the MIT licence, and the Any-Block data format is open the same way so anyone can build on them. The applications above that layer, anytype-js, anytype-swift and anytype-kotlin, sit under the Any Source Available Licence: free to read, modify and use for personal, academic, research and development purposes, while commercial use needs consent from the Any Association. There is no central registry of users and no email address required to create an account, and users can self-host their own backup node. The company reports 20,000 people using Any-Sync daily and 80,000 monthly, with native apps for desktop, iOS and Android.

Anytype dates from 2018, when work started on a local-first alternative to cloud workspaces; an early prototype was a collaborative editor running on IPFS. The software is governed by Any Association, an association domiciled in Zug, Switzerland, with the team working out of Berlin, and that association holds the rights to the application layer while inviting major contributors to co-decide development.
