Business overview

mailbox is a German email and collaboration suite sold as one digital workspace: Mail, Drive, Meet (video conferencing), Office and an admin area for companies, reachable through webmail, standard client protocols and mobile apps, with calendar and address book included. Encryption is part of the product rather than an add-on: mailbox.org Guard puts PGP in the browser, S/MIME is offered to business customers, and data is encrypted in storage and in transit.

Plans run from €1 per user per month for 2 GB of mail storage to €4 for 20 GB of mail with 10 GB of Drive, Office and Meet, and €12 for 50 GB of mail with 100 GB of Drive; aliases and custom domain names start at the middle tier. Drive data is kept redundantly in two independent locations and mailboxes sit in Berlin data centres running on renewable electricity. The service is GDPR-compliant, certified to ISO 27001, attested under BSI C5, carries the Cybersecurity Made in Europe label, was a Stiftung Warentest test winner in 2015 and rated very good (1.4) in 2016. A transparency report lists requests for customer data, and an EVAC emergency platform extends the suite in 2026.

mailbox.org is operated by Heinlein Hosting GmbH in Berlin, with Peer Heinlein as CEO, and belongs to the Heinlein Group: more than 150 employees and over 30 years of running Linux and email infrastructure, including Heinlein Support. The service launched in 2014 as an encrypted mailbox pitched against the big international providers; the group works with Linux and open-source software and supports the FSFE, the Tor network and Digitalcourage.

Value proposition

The switch is a consolidation as much as a privacy choice: one German subscription bundles mail, Drive storage, Office and video meetings, with PGP in the browser and S/MIME for business mailboxes — instead of a mail plan plus three separate subscriptions.
