StartMail

StartMail is a paid email service: webmail and IMAP mailboxes on a startmail.com address or on a domain you bring, sold by subscription with no ads and no tracking. One-click PGP encryption and password-protected messages let you send encrypted mail to recipients who do not use encryption themselves, and end-to-end encryption is available over IMAP, so the mailbox works in Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail or K-9 Mail instead of only in a web interface.

The distinguishing feature is aliases: unlimited disposable addresses you create and delete at will, including one-click burner aliases built for single sign-ups. Personal plans carry 20GB of storage and one custom domain, business plans 30GB and unlimited domains; the listed prices are $4.99 per month billed annually ($59.88 a year) and $6.99 per month billed annually respectively, with additional accounts at 25% off, shared aliases within a group subscription, Bitcoin payment on annual plans and a 7-day free trial. Two-factor authentication, tracking-pixel blocking, malicious-link warnings, a personal spam filter, hidden IP addresses, encrypted storage in the Netherlands, a migration tool for mail and contacts and 24/7 human support are included.

StartMail was founded by Robert E.G. Beens and David Bodnick, the creators of the search engine Startpage, and launched in public beta in 2013 with more than 50,000 testers before its general release in 2014, when it took a PCMag Editors' Choice award. Headquarters and self-hosted servers are in the Netherlands, so mail falls under Dutch law and the GDPR, and the company is partnered with the Dutch security cluster Security Delta (HSD). It is proprietary and vendor-hosted, and says it is trusted by hundreds of thousands of users.
