Wire

Wire is an end-to-end encrypted collaboration application that covers messaging, audio and video calls, conferencing and file sharing in one client. It is open source and offered both as a cloud-hosted service and as an on-premises deployment, and encryption is applied by default across messages, calls and files on every linked device, including Perfect Forward Secrecy and Post Compromise Security, encrypted history backups and manual device verification.

A free tier covers teams of up to five people, while the SMB plan costs EUR 7.45 per person per month on annual billing (EUR 8.94 monthly) for teams of up to 100, adding video conferences of up to 150 participants, single sign-on and SCIM and administrative controls. The Enterprise plan adds federation with Wire Cloud, ID Shield, multi-tenancy and data sovereignty, and on-premises operation is available on request; NGOs get a 40% discount. Chat participation is capped at 500 people, or 2,000 when powered by the MLS protocol, and admins can restrict file sharing and guest links. The company says it is used by more than 1,800 organisations worldwide, among them governments, parliaments and operators of critical national infrastructure.

Wire is headquartered in Berlin, with app development handled by Wire Swiss GmbH in Zug, Switzerland, and further locations in Berlin, Zug, Paris and Southfield in the United States. Its staff sit on national and international committees, and the company describes itself as a co-initiator of the Messaging Layer Security standard, with current work focused on interoperability between messaging services. Wire is mostly consumed as a cloud app, but a significant part of its user base runs on independent backends inside its customers' own organisations.
