Business overview

Nextcloud Talk is the chat, video call and webinar app of Nextcloud, installed on a self-hosted Nextcloud server rather than signed up for as a service. Calls connect browsers and desktop or mobile clients peer-to-peer; Nextcloud hosts a STUN server for firewall traversal, a local TURN server is recommended, and an optional High Performance Back-end takes over signalling so very large calls do not depend on the server's own bandwidth.

Chat, calls, screen sharing and webinars sit in the same app as file sharing and document editing, so a document can be shared into a conversation and worked on there. Features include threaded conversations, end-to-end encrypted calls in the web and desktop clients, federated chat and meetings between Nextcloud servers, bridging a room to IRC, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, Mattermost or XMPP, meeting lobbies with moderator permissions, optional AI transcription and call summaries, Secure View watermarking for external shares and video verification, which requires a call before a share is unlocked. A typical private setup handles dozens of calls of 6 to 10 participants each, up to 20 without video, while the High Performance Back-end scales a single call into the hundreds or thousands. Talk shipped in January 2018 and can be deployed in air-gapped environments; its security is reviewed by third parties and backed by a $10,000 bug bounty.

It is built by Nextcloud GmbH, started in June 2016 by Frank Karlitschek and Niels Mache, with a team now spread over 25 countries and offices in Berlin and Stuttgart. The company develops everything as open source with no open-core or proprietary extensions, has estimated more than 300,000 Nextcloud servers online, and in 2025 pledged to invest EUR 250 million in digital sovereignty by 2030.

Value proposition

Because Talk is the chat and meeting app of a server the organisation already runs, replacing both a meeting tool and a chat tool takes one app and one login: chat, calls, files and document editing stay together, calls can be end-to-end encrypted, and call metadata never leaves infrastructure the customer controls.
