Whereby

Whereby is a browser-based video calling service built on the WebRTC standard. It is sold as two separate products: Whereby Meetings, licensed per user, which provides instant calls and permanent room links for individuals and teams, and Whereby Embedded, charged by usage, which lets a developer add video rooms into another product through an API and SDK tooling, including programmatic room creation and custom branding. Participants join a call from a browser, so no client software has to be installed on either side.

The feature set includes AI-powered transcriptions and captions, chat, file sharing, screen sharing and a virtual whiteboard, alongside custom branding and call quality and reliability insights. The company positions the service for telehealth and eLearning use cases among others. It states that more than 150 million video call sessions have been powered on the platform, that 90% of users rate its usability as good or very good and that 86% of customers would recommend it. Named customers include Jane App, where 90% of video sessions are rated four or five stars for quality, nilo.health, which reported a 60% drop in technical issue tickets after switching, and DrDoctor for hybrid care in the NHS.

The company was founded in Norway in 2013 as appear.in, starting as a summer intern project inside the telecom operator Telenor and presented as one of the first web applications to use WebRTC. It was spun out to new owners, Videonor, in 2017 and rebranded to Whereby in 2019. Whereby Embedded followed in 2020, and in 2023 the product and engineering teams were refocused entirely on the API offering. The team works fully remotely. The service is GDPR compliant and ISO 27001 certified, and can be configured as a HIPAA-compliant setup.
