Business overview

Ory builds identity, session and permission services as separate composable servers rather than one monolithic stack. Ory Kratos handles identities: registration, login, MFA and 2FA, account recovery and session management. Ory Hydra issues OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect tokens and is OpenID Certified. Ory Keto covers fine-grained authorization, Ory Oathkeeper is an identity and access proxy that can sit in front of APIs or plug into an existing gateway, Ory Polis bridges SAML to OAuth 2.0, and Ory Talos issues API keys. Each service runs standalone from a small container image, and the Ory Elements component library lets teams build login screens in their own frontend.

The same codebase and APIs are offered three ways: the open source components on your own infrastructure, the Ory Enterprise License for self-hosted production with SLAs and security patches, and the Ory Network, a fully managed multi-regional service with a console and a default account experience. Ory reports 3.3 billion identities managed, 685 million container image pulls and around 48,000 GitHub stars across its projects, operating on three continents, and names OpenAI, Societe Generale, Mistral AI and Axel Springer among its customers. A newer line, Agent IAM, applies the same controls to AI agents, with runtime enforcement for tools like Claude Code and Codex.

The commercial entity behind the projects is Ory Corp, which records a founding date of 21 June 2019 and states that both paid offerings are built on the open source codebase with the same APIs, features and configuration. The architecture is API-first and headless, built for stateless horizontal scaling with full ownership of the user interface, which places it among the open source-first identity vendors.

If you are replacing a bundled identity stack, Ory lets you take only the pieces you need — identities, OAuth2/OIDC, permissions, an access proxy — with the same APIs self-hosted or managed, so your own login UI and an exit route stay yours.
