Business overview

Forgejo is a self-hosted software forge: a Git server with a web interface that a team installs on its own machine or server and maintains itself. It covers what is expected of a hosted platform - repositories with pull requests, project management, package hosting and Forgejo Actions for automation - while keeping a small server footprint. Its developers say it requires an order of magnitude fewer resources than other forges and is meant to be installed and maintained without expert skills.

Releases are tagged by major and minor version, with container images published under both 15.0 and 15 tags for automated upgrades; there is deliberately no latest tag, because a major upgrade needs manual verification. Support targets Linux, and Windows binaries were dropped in 2024, with a community-built Forgejo runner still offered for Windows machines. Federation between forges is in active development on ForgeFed, an extension of ActivityPub, and is labelled experimental: moderation and access control are unfinished, and breaking changes can leave an instance's domain unusable for federation.

The project is developed by a contributor community whose governance is set collectively, and its domains are held in custody by Codeberg e.V., a non-profit association registered in Berlin whose bylaws aim to guarantee the openness and continued availability of free software; Codeberg also runs a large public instance. Forgejo is GPL v3+ from version 9.0 onward, MIT through 8.0, and states it will always be free software. Funding comes from volunteer contributions, grants, donations and delegated employment, and security reports go to a team shared with Codeberg.

Value proposition

It is governed independently of any for-profit vendor and its domains are held by a non-profit, so migration from a commercial forge ends with the code and the roadmap in the hands of the people running it.
