n8n

n8n is a workflow automation and AI orchestration platform built by n8n GmbH, a company in Berlin, Germany. Automations are assembled in a visual editor where each node stands for an application, service or operation and nodes are wired into a workflow; where the visual nodes fall short, users write JavaScript or Python inside a code node. It is built on Node.js and TypeScript and runs either self-hosted — Docker images and the full source are on GitHub — or as the vendor's managed cloud service.

The platform ships more than 500 integrations as pre-built nodes, with HTTP and GraphQL request nodes covering anything not built in, plus custom nodes, webhooks and queue triggers, git-based version control and separate development and production environments. For AI work it provides agent and RAG building blocks, MCP support, human-in-the-loop approvals and structured inputs and outputs for AI steps. Governance features include SSO with SAML and LDAP, RBAC, audit logs and log streaming to a SIEM. The project reports 191.9k GitHub stars, 4.9 out of 5 on G2 and over 200,000 community members, and published case studies name Huel and Vodafone; cloud data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany.

n8n was founded by Jan Oberhauser in Berlin and first released publicly in October 2019. The source is publicly available under the company's "fair-code" model — currently its Sustainable Use License, which permits self-hosting and modification but not reselling n8n as a competing hosted service — and a free Community Edition can be self-hosted. Coverage positions it as a code-friendly alternative to hosted automation services such as Zapier and Make, aimed at technical teams. Cloud plans are billed per whole workflow execution, not per step or per user, with unlimited users on every plan.
