Penpot

Penpot is a web-based design and prototyping tool for interface work, built on web standards rather than a proprietary format: layouts are made with real CSS Grid and Flex, projects live in an open file format, and assets export as CSS, HTML, SVG and JSON. Because the editor works with the same primitives a browser does, the code inspector reports values a developer can use as they are, and components and design tokens travel through shared libraries instead of screenshots.

Design files, teams and plugins are unlimited on every tier, and the core editor is the same across plans: path editor, components, variants, design tokens, styles, prototyping with transitions and flows, code and properties inspectors, REST API and webhooks. Cloud plans are sold on team size and storage rather than features: Professional covers up to eight team members, unlimited viewers, 10 GB of storage and seven days of version history, while Unlimited lifts storage to 25 GB, extends history to 30 days and caps the monthly bill at $175 whatever the team size. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM role assignment, audit logs, guest access controls, IP whitelisting and a choice of hosting region in the EU or the US. Self-hosting runs the same product on your own infrastructure, and an MCP server for connecting agents and LLMs is part of the current product.

Penpot comes from Kaleidos, a European software company that moved from consultancy to open-source products, based in Spain. It is developed in the open with no vendor lock-in — users own their designs and code — and is funded by Decibel Partners, Athos Capital and a group of angel investors. The company says tens of thousands of organisations use it, including a number of well-known open-source projects.
