Business overview

Collabora Online is a browser-based document suite — word processor, spreadsheets, presentations and drawings — built on LibreOffice technology and delivered as a component rather than as a standalone service. It runs on servers you control and is embedded into another application over the WOPI protocol, so documents are opened and edited in place inside file sync and share platforms, groupware, learning management systems, intranet portals or a product's own file storage, without copies leaving the host platform. It deploys on your own infrastructure or through a hosting partner, and the same engine ships as Collabora Office for desktop and mobile.

Deployment is container-based, with scaling on Kubernetes handled by the COOL Controller, plus theming and API hooks so the editor fits a host product's look and workflow. File compatibility covers Microsoft OOXML, OpenDocument and other office formats. The company works with more than 230 partners worldwide who take on integrations, migrations and hosting, and says the suite reaches millions of end users. Named partners and deployments include Nextcloud, XWiki, Univention, Open-Xchange, 1&1, CERN, the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the University of Lille. Support packages carry an SLA and the product is positioned as GDPR-compliant.

Collabora Online is developed by Collabora Productivity, a division of the open-source consultancy Collabora. It describes itself as the single largest team of certified LibreOffice engineers and as the largest contributor of commits to the LibreOffice codebase. Staff are spread across more than 20 countries and number over 50, with offices at the St John's Innovation Centre in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and in Hamburg, Germany. The codebase is open source and the software is self-hostable.

Switching means a real office engine inside storage you already run: documents are edited on your own infrastructure instead of being uploaded to a third party, and the source stays open to audit.
