Qwant

Qwant is a French general-purpose search engine that combines its own web index with results supplied by third-party providers. Its index is built by crawlers of the "Qwantify" family, which revisit pages to pick up updates; results are ranked automatically by an algorithm using criteria such as keyword presence, frequency and emphasis in the page, the age of the page, the popularity of the site and the readability of the page. The same interface covers web, news, shopping and map results, and Qwant ships a browser extension for setting it as the default engine plus an iOS and Android app that also works as a browser.

Privacy is the organising principle: Qwant says it stores no search history, sets no advertising cookies, sells no personal data and does not personalise results, so two users see the same ranking. AI-generated answers and a one-click page "Summary" are offered free and without limits once an account is created. News results come from a restricted list of media sites, map points of interest from OpenStreetMap, and Shopping offers from Microsoft partner merchants; the service is reachable from any country and is built to comply with European law and the recommendations of the French data protection authority. Qwant Junior, a separate service for children aged 6 to 12, filters content against a list maintained with the Universite de Toulouse.

Qwant is operated by QWANT SAS, registered at 42 avenue de la Porte de Clichy in Paris, with offices in Paris, Nice and Rouen. The company presents itself as the first independent European search engine with its own web index, and part of its results rest on European technology called "Staan", provided by European Search Perspective, an entity co-founded by Ecosia and Qwant.
