Mojeek

Mojeek is an independent search engine that runs its own crawler and index rather than drawing results from another provider, and it does not track the people who search it. Queries are ranked by its own algorithms, and the same index is licensed through APIs for site search, embedded web search and topical search engines built by third parties.

The index has been crawled and built from scratch since 2011 and passed 9 billion pages in 2025, after 2 billion in 2018 and 7 billion in 2023. Search features include image search, news search, a knowledge box, semantic search, a search summary feature, SafeSearch in beta, cookieless preference storage and Focus, which narrows a search to a chosen set of sites. API access comes in two forms: a Search API for embedding general web results, and an Organisation Search API that adds on-demand page indexing, search across multiple websites and faceted search by tag or category. Free search boxes are offered for websites that just want a query field.

Mojeek is operated by Mojeek Limited, registered in England, with its office at the Sussex Innovation Centre on the University of Sussex science park in Brighton. Founder Marc Smith has been developing search engine technology since 2004; the project took outside investment in 2009, more in 2013, funding to double the index in 2016 and further funding for the team in 2018. Its history also includes launching the Search Engine Map, a NoML campaign and Search Choices.
