Business overview

Vivaldi is a browser built around the tools other browsers leave to extensions. Mail, Calendar, a feed reader and Notes live in the sidebar; tabs can be tiled side by side, grouped into two-level stacks or sorted into Workspaces; Quick Commands, mouse gestures and Command Chains drive the interface from the keyboard; and a built-in blocker handles ads and trackers. It ships for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, syncs history, bookmarks, tabs and passwords between devices, and still runs the extensions already installed in a Chrome profile.

Vivaldi reports 4.0 million users and states that it does not track or profile them: the sites visited, what is typed in the browser and what is downloaded are not collected, and synced data is end-to-end encrypted and hosted on the company's own servers in Iceland. The interface is customisable down to button placement, panel layout and themes, and the browser deliberately ships without a generative AI assistant that filters what a page shows. The mobile build carries desktop-style tabs and the same blocker, and Proton VPN is available with one click.

Vivaldi Technologies is based in Norway and Iceland and works across seven countries. The company states it has no external investors and answers to a user community rather than advertisers; revenue comes from partner deals with search engines and bookmark partners, from Direct Match, and from donations. CEO and co-founder Jon S. von Tetzchner fronts its press material, and the company presents itself as an independent European alternative to the browsers run by ad-funded platforms.

Value proposition

Mail, calendar, feeds, notes, tab tiling and workspaces are part of the browser rather than a stack of third-party extensions, so a heavily-tabbed workflow cannot be broken by an add-on being pulled from a store.
