Business overview

Contabo is a German hosting provider that sells virtual servers, dedicated hardware and the add-ons around them directly to end customers. The line-up is Cloud VPS, Cloud VDS with dedicated cores, and bare metal dedicated servers, all provisioned from a web control panel with an API and a command-line client for automation. Servers can be customised with .iso or .qcow2 images, cloud-init scripts and SSH keys, and come with one-click application images, free automatic DDoS protection and unlimited traffic at an average of 100 Mbit/s.

Entry pricing runs from about EUR 5.50 a month for a Cloud VPS with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM and 100 GB SSD on a 24-month term, from EUR 39 for a VDS with dedicated cores and NVMe, and from EUR 149 for a dedicated server with 64 GB RAM and 1 TB NVMe on a 12-month term; the company's own selling point is how much RAM and disk a euro buys. It runs 11 locations across 9 regions on 4 continents, managed in-house, with data centres in Munich from 2009, Nuremberg from 2014 and the first non-European sites in the United States from 2020. VPS and VDS orders are mostly set up within minutes and standard dedicated servers usually within 90 minutes. Support is by ticket around the clock and by phone and live chat during German business hours.

Contabo GmbH was founded in spring 2003 in Munich as Giga-International, renamed Contabo in 2013 and then opened up beyond the German market. It is still based in Munich, at Welfenstrasse 22, with offices in Cologne, Nuremberg and Prague plus coworking space in Berlin and Hamburg, and around 300 staff. The company reports a customer base in the hundreds of thousands, spread over about 190 countries, and a fleet that has grown from a single server in a data centre to several hundred thousand machines.

Value proposition

Most migrations here are driven by price per gigabyte: the same monthly budget buys considerably more RAM and disk than at the large clouds, on the same standardised hardware in every location.
