Business overview

Cleura sells infrastructure as a service built on OpenStack: virtual machines, containers, storage, databases and managed services, provisioned from a web panel or API and running in the company's own European data centres. Three deployment models are offered — Public Cloud for self-service and automation, Compliant Cloud for mission-critical and regulated data, and Private Cloud, a turnkey OpenStack environment for one organisation.

Compute is billed per second. Container workloads have three options: the Cleura Container Orchestration Engine, a Gardener-based Kubernetes service whose control planes Cleura runs and which scales clusters horizontally and vertically; a fully managed Kubernetes service; and managed OpenShift. Managed databases and training are also on the list. Regions run in Sweden and Germany. Cleura builds its pitch on data sovereignty — it states that, unlike AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, it is not subject to US extraterritorial surveillance laws such as FISA 702 — and names defence, public sector, AI, media, MedTech and cybersecurity as its industries.

Cleura AB is headquartered in Karlskrona, Sweden, with a second office in Solna, and is part of the Iver group. The brand is the successor to City Network, and the company presents its OpenStack and open-source work as a way to avoid vendor lock-in while keeping data under European law.

Value proposition

OpenStack underneath the whole platform means infrastructure built for Cleura moves to other OpenStack clouds with far less rework, so leaving costs less than it does on a proprietary hyperscaler stack.
