Business overview

Contentful is a hosted content platform: a headless, composable CMS where content is modelled once as structured, reusable components and delivered by API to websites, apps, kiosks, digital signage and other channels. Editors work in a web Studio, developers extend the stack through a marketplace of apps and integrations, and the company's current pitch centres on built-in personalisation, modular content that propagates updates everywhere at once, and content prepared to be read by AI agents as well as people. A newer product, Palmata, is aimed at tracking and improving how an organisation is represented in AI answers.

Contract sizes quoted on the site: 38,000+ websites run on it, it serves over 180 billion API calls a month, and carries a 99.99% uptime commitment. On Black Friday 2025 in the retail sector it handled 4.6 billion delivery requests. The marketplace holds 100+ apps and integrations, and the company counts a community of 550,000+. It says more than 4,000 organisations use the platform, including 30% of the Fortune 500, and names KFC and Docusign among customers and Mailchimp, Notion, Atlassian and Rapha among its partner ecosystem. Personalisation and campaign changes are marketed as no-code work for marketers, across 20+ languages in one estate.

Contentful was founded in Berlin in 2013 by Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri and pioneered the headless CMS category before repositioning around what it calls an intelligent composable content platform. The company raised a $175 million Series F led by Tiger Global at a valuation above $3 billion, is named in the Forbes Cloud 100, and employs 700+ people across offices in Berlin, Denver, San Francisco, New York and London. The platform is proprietary and vendor-hosted, with no self-hosted edition.
