Business overview

Shopware is an open-source commerce platform for building online stores and B2B portals. It is distributed in three shapes: a self-hosted Community Edition that runs on your own server or cloud infrastructure, a managed PaaS, and Shopware Cloud as SaaS. The Community Edition is the MIT-licensed core and the paid plans extend it. Storefront, CMS, SEO, analytics and drag-and-drop layout editing are part of the platform, and from version 6.7.1.0 the admin ships with Copilot, a built-in AI assistant for content, product and routine operational work.

The platform targets mid-market and enterprise retail and wholesale, across consumer goods, manufacturing, automotive, home and DIY. Integrations bring CRM, payments and shipping together in one place, and the compliance features listed include AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2 in transit, SOC 2 Type II for hosted environments, ISO 27001 and GDPR support. Around the product sits a partner and community layer: more than 1,200 certified Shopware agencies, a Discord community of over 6,000 users, developer workshops and an academy.

Shopware was founded in 2000; founder Stefan Hamann and co-founder Sebastian Hamann sit on the executive board, and the company describes itself as having grown from a small family business into a large ecommerce community while keeping the open-source philosophy at the centre of development. Copilot's infrastructure runs in European data centres, and the vendor states that its AI providers have no access to a merchant's store and that entered data is not used to train their models.

Value proposition

The switch is control of the stack: the storefront, CMS, SEO and analytics run on one MIT-licensed core you can self-host, so customer, order and product data ends up on infrastructure you run instead of in a vendor's SaaS tenancy.
