Strapi

Strapi is an open-source headless CMS distributed under the MIT licence and run as a Node.js application in TypeScript. Content types, components and dynamic zones are modelled in a no-code builder, and Strapi turns that model into REST and GraphQL APIs that front ends query directly. Because it is an ordinary Node.js app, teams can extend it beyond configuration — custom controllers, services and middleware on the backend, a customised admin panel on the front — and add reviewed plugins and integrations from the community marketplace.

It runs either on your own servers, with your choice of database, or on Strapi Cloud, a managed option that includes Postgres, a CDN and email and deploys from a GitHub repository. Governance features cover audit logs, review workflows, content history and SSO. The company states it is SOC 2 certified and GDPR compliant, and that 3,000+ customers use it, naming Airbus and Tesco Technology.

Strapi was published on GitHub in October 2015 by Pierre Burgy, Aurélien Georget and Jim, who had been building sites and apps as freelance developers; the company itself, Strapi SAS, was incorporated in France in October 2016. It has been a remote-only organisation with no physical office since 2023, and is backed by investors including Index Ventures, Accel and Stride.VC.
