Business overview

LimeSurvey is a survey and questionnaire platform for building forms, running them with logic and branching, and analysing the responses. It comes in two forms: a free, open-source community edition that an organisation installs on its own server, and LimeSurvey Cloud, the vendor's hosted service. The project began as PHPSurveyor, was renamed LimeSurvey by Carsten Schmitz, and the company behind it, LimeSurvey GmbH, was founded in 2015 in Hamburg, Germany.

The builder offers over 30 question types, more than 800 pre-designed templates for market research, customer feedback and academic studies, multilingual surveys in over 80 languages, and research methods including conjoint and maxDiff. Surveys are shared through public links, website embeds, QR codes and password-protected URLs, and results come back through a built-in statistics view and dashboards. The hosted service offers a choice of seven hosting regions, 2048-bit SSL, anonymous surveys and WCAG 2.2 Level AA-aligned accessibility, with ISO 27001 described as in progress. The vendor reports 60,000+ companies and institutions across 160+ countries, 250+ universities and research institutions, 75+ public sector organisations and 1.5M+ users.

The community edition is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later, and self-hosting it keeps survey data and access under the operator's own control. LimeSurvey Cloud is the commercial option, with dedicated servers available on a corporate plan. The company is headquartered at Papenreye 63 in Hamburg and Carsten Schmitz is its CTO.

Value proposition

Because the community edition is GPL-licensed and self-hostable, survey data and the hosting region stay under your own control instead of a vendor's plan, while the same codebase is available as a managed cloud service in seven regions.
