Business overview

OpenStreetMap is a free, editable map of the world assembled by a community of volunteer mappers rather than by a vendor. Contributors survey roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, buildings and land use, and upload the results to a shared database that anyone can query. Mapping is done from aerial imagery, GPS traces and plain field notes, with an emphasis on local knowledge: the people who live in an area are the ones who check that what is in the database matches what is on the ground.

The result is a geodata source rather than a finished product, and it is used by thousands of websites, mobile apps and hardware devices. Routing is served by engines such as GraphHopper, OSRM and Valhalla, search and geocoding by Nominatim, and rendering by community tile servers. Because the project does not offer a free-of-charge map API or tile service to third parties, commercial users typically run their own rendering stack or work with a hosted provider. The database also incorporates openly licensed data from national mapping agencies, among them Ordnance Survey in the United Kingdom and IGN in Spain.

OpenStreetMap is open data, licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL), which allows copying, distribution and adaptation as long as OpenStreetMap and its contributors are credited and derived databases keep the same licence. The website and related services are operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, an international not-for-profit organisation registered in the United Kingdom that supports the project without controlling it. Hosting is supported by Fastly, corporate members and other partners, and OpenStreetMap, the magnifying glass logo and State of the Map are registered trademarks of the foundation.
