Business overview

PeerTube is free, open-source software that you install on your own web server to run a video hosting site. The design is a network of independent instances rather than one central platform: instances speak ActivityPub to each other, so a viewer registered on one can follow channels hosted on another and reach them from Mastodon or Pleroma. Playback can use peer-to-peer delivery over WebRTC, which hands part of the bandwidth of a popular video to the viewers' browsers instead of the server.

PeerTube's own site counts around 1,600 platforms and 1,000,000 videos across the network. Creators get an adaptive player with chapters and previews, playlists, watch history and follows, channel synchronisation from YouTube or Vimeo, video editing and re-uploading, live streaming over RTMP from OBS with replays and live chat. Administrators control registration and upload limits, moderator roles, abuse reports, blocklists for accounts and entire platforms, branding, plugins, themes and transcoding with remote runners. Content can be exported from one instance and re-imported on another. An official mobile app is on Google Play, F-Droid and the App Store, and the core software can be run so that no personal data is sent to third parties.

PeerTube is developed by Framasoft, a French non-profit digital education organisation, and paid for mostly by donations: Framasoft states that over 90% of its funding comes from them. Development is deliberately small — two employees, one on the core project since 2018 and one on the mobile app since 2023, with volunteers around them. There is no advertising and no recommendation engine, and Framasoft holds the PeerTube trademark. The stated aim is a decentralised alternative that lives alongside large video platforms rather than replacing them.

Running an instance puts the moderation policy, the data and the community in your hands, while federation means your videos stay reachable from other PeerTube sites and from Mastodon instead of being locked to a platform you do not control.
