Business overview

Qobuz is a French music service that sells music two ways: a subscription for unlimited streaming in lossless and high-resolution audio, and a download store where albums are bought outright and kept as files. Both run off one catalogue of more than 100 million tracks, and 24-bit hi-res streaming is available across the clients rather than held back for a top tier.

The company credits itself with several firsts: the first music service to retail CD-quality 16-bit/44.1 kHz files, the first to offer that quality for streaming, and the first to stream 24-bit hi-res to subscribers. Streaming starts at $10.83 a month, and the Sublime tiers add discounts on high-resolution purchases, while downloads are delivered in lossless CD quality or hi-res in several formats. Editorial work is part of the product, with Panoramas, reviews and interviews written in-house, digital booklets and liner notes for albums, and hand-picked selections rather than algorithmic radio alone. Qobuz says it is the only streaming platform that publishes its average pay per stream. Apps cover web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

The service is published by Xandrie SA, registered in the Bobigny trade register with premises in Pantin in the Paris area. Qobuz began in 2007 as a high-resolution download store started by two music lovers, added streaming later, and passed to Xandrie SA in January 2016. It remains proprietary, vendor-hosted software with no self-hosted option.

One account covers streaming and buying: Sublime plans stream in 24-bit and cut what hi-res downloads cost, so the albums worth keeping end up as files you own instead of rented shelf space.
