Business overview

SoundCloud is a music streaming and hosting service where artists upload their own tracks and listeners play them in the browser, in mobile apps and through embedded players. Publishing and listening sit in one place: a creator puts a track up, fans stream it, comment on it and follow the artist, so discovery happens on the same platform rather than in a separate store. A public API and an embeddable widget let other applications upload, play and engage with tracks on the service.

On the creator side the company sells SoundCloud for Artists, which covers distribution and monetization, plus vinyl distribution for physical releases; listeners buy subscriptions such as Go. SoundCloud describes its payout model as fan-powered royalties, paying independent artists according to the listeners who actually play them, and it states that its library spans more than 40 million artists. Advertising is sold alongside the consumer service, and AI partners and integrations are listed as separate offerings.

SoundCloud was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Berlin, with further offices in London, Los Angeles and New York. The software is proprietary and vendor-hosted: there is no open-source edition and no self-hosted deployment. The company describes itself as a music entertainment business built around artist independence, with fans and creators forming the two sides of the product.
