Business overview

Proton Mail is an end-to-end encrypted email service operated from Switzerland by Proton AG. Messages are held under zero-access encryption, so not even Proton can read an inbox, and the encryption runs in the background rather than requiring setup from the user. One account covers mail, calendar, encrypted file storage and a password manager, reached through webmail and open-source apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

More than 100 million people and over 100,000 businesses use Proton. The free plan includes 1 GB of storage and one address; Mail Plus adds 15 GB, 10 extra addresses, 10 hide-my-email aliases and one custom domain; Unlimited combines 500 GB, 15 addresses, three custom domains and unlimited aliases with the VPN, password manager and encrypted storage. Easy Switch imports mail, calendars and contacts from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and Apple, and keeps a live connection to Gmail so new mail keeps arriving. PhishGuard blocks known phishing attempts and warns on suspicious links, mail trackers are blocked, and the inbox sorts messages into categories and lists subscriptions for one-click unsubscribe.

Proton launched in the summer of 2014, after a crowdfunding campaign in which more than 10,000 people gave over $500,000. Services are run by Proton AG, a Swiss corporation based in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, whose primary shareholder is the non-profit Proton Foundation and which has no venture capital investors. All Proton services are open source and independently audited.

The move is one click: Easy Switch pulls in a Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo mailbox, calendar and contacts and keeps them syncing, so leaving an ad-funded provider needs no manual export or downtime.
