Business overview

MapTiler is a mapping platform aimed at developers: it supplies map styles, tile servers and APIs for publishing interactive maps in web and mobile applications. The maps can be consumed from MapTiler's cloud or served from the customer's own hardware with MapTiler Server, with a separate product, MapTiler Engine, for processing geodata on the customer's side. The client side is a TypeScript SDK, and third-party or open-source rendering libraries can be used against the same services.

Preset styles cover streets and transport, satellite, outdoor and topographic, and data visualisation, and all of them can be restyled in a visual map designer. Beyond tiles the platform offers a static maps API, WMTS services, search and geocoding with autocomplete, batch and reverse geocoding, IP geolocation, elevation and coordinate APIs, weather layers with particle animation, and 3D sessions for photorealistic Gaussian splatting models. Uploaded TIFF, GeoJSON, KML and GPX data is tiled and hosted inside the account. The company says 500 million people see its maps every month through customer apps and websites, and lists Siemens, Oracle, Bosch, NOAA, Cisco and NBCUniversal among the organisations using them. Cloud pricing runs from a free tier through a $30-a-month pay-as-you-go plan to prepaid volume contracts with a 99.9% SLA.

MapTiler is a Swiss company: the contracting entity is MapTiler AG, with its headquarters and main office in Zug, part of the development team in Brno in Czechia, and remote staff elsewhere. It was assembled by CEO Petr Pridal, whose background is in cartography, geodesy and computer science, after earlier freelance, research and open-source work. The company states that it supports open-source projects and that its SDKs and JavaScript APIs are open-source.

The same tile stack runs hosted or on your own hardware: MapTiler Server deploys maps on-premises or fully offline, so air-gapped and regulated sites can keep the styles and APIs they build against without changing provider.
