Business overview
Adyen is an Amsterdam fintech platform for large businesses: one system for accepting payments, sending payouts globally, taking payments in person and moving money intelligently — built in-house from the ground up rather than assembled from a patchwork of acquired systems. It runs on its own acquiring licences: European, a US branch licence, and a network extending through Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Puerto Rico.
The numbers are the argument. Adyen processed €1.4 trillion annually across 150+ currencies and 200+ local payment methods, from 29 offices, and reports 99.999% historical platform uptime. One API covers every use case and channel: Adyen for Platforms embeds payments, accounts, card issuing and capital under a client's own brand; Issuing and the Terminal API extend the same integration into the physical store; and risk management, conversion optimisation and reconciliation come with the platform rather than as separate products. Named customers and case studies include Adobe, Meta, Prada, Nord Security (conversion up 10%), L'Occitane (40 systems consolidated) and, as its first global enterprise merchant back in 2009, Groupon.
Adyen was founded in 2006 in Amsterdam, where it is still headquartered and has been publicly listed on Euronext Amsterdam (ADYEN) since June 2018. It employs more than 4,000 people of 115+ nationalities, and names retail, travel and hospitality, digital media and content, SaaS platforms and marketplaces, food and beverage, and financial services as its core industries.
