Klarna is a payments company with a consumer side and a merchant side. At checkout a shop can offer pay now, pay later or pay over time, with Klarna handling the financing and the credit decision, and shoppers reach the same account through an app, a card and a balance that works online and in physical stores. In the United States the financing is issued and the balance held by WebBank.
Klarna reports 120 million active consumers, 1.2 million merchants, 26 countries and roughly 3.4 million transactions a day. The Klarna Card is accepted anywhere Visa is taken, including through Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the 2025 membership plans add boosted cashback, travel benefits and subscriptions. Eligible purchases carry buyer protection and fraud monitoring, and the app covers price search, savings and cashback alongside the payment options.
The company started in Stockholm in 2005 as Kreditor, the work of three Swedish entrepreneurs, and took the name Klarna in 2010. It passed a valuation of more than USD 1 billion in 2012, acquired SOFORT in 2014, secured a full banking licence in 2017 and launched the Klarna app in 2018. In September 2025 Klarna Group plc listed on the New York Stock Exchange under KLAR.
