bunq is a mobile-first bank: accounts are opened inside the app in about five minutes, using a video selfie for identity verification instead of a branch visit. Personal and business accounts, cards, savings, budgeting, investing and payments all live in the same application.
Money is organised into separate Pockets for rent, travel or savings goals, and a digital credit card is issued at signup that works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Plans run from a free tier to Core at €3.99, Pro at €9.99 and Elite at €18.99 per month; savings interest is advertised at up to 3.01%, balances are covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000, and students get Pro free. Business accounts add company cards and bookkeeping, and bunq also offers joint accounts, stock and crypto trading, travel features and support in the customer's language around the clock.
bunq B.V. is headquartered in Amsterdam and was founded in March 2012 by Ali Niknam; the app went live in 2015 and the bank has held an EU banking licence since 2014. It is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank and registered in Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and Italy, reports more than 22 million users, and describes itself as Europe's second-largest neobank.
