Business overview

Cryptomator is an open-source encryption tool that adds a client-side layer to cloud storage you already use. Rather than moving files to a new provider, you create a vault: an ordinary folder inside Google Drive, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox, pCloud, Nextcloud or any other sync service. Cryptomator encrypts file contents and filenames with AES and 256-bit keys, and entering the vault password mounts a virtual drive you can copy files into like a USB stick. Encryption happens locally, so the provider holds only ciphertext, and no account with Cryptomator is needed to start.

The project reports more than 4,000,000 downloads. Desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux are free, including every encryption feature; the Android and iOS apps are free in read-only mode and unlock write access with a one-time purchase, sold outside the stores as an APK or via F-Droid, and anonymously through ProxyStore with Monero, Bitcoin or cash. Current releases are 1.19.3, requiring Windows 10 version 1803, macOS 11, Android 8.0 or iOS 14. Cryptomator Hub adds team vaults with zero-knowledge key management, per-member accounts and identity-provider integration, and the vendor documents GDPR-compliant syncing when the cloud service has a suitable data processing agreement.

Cryptomator is developed by Skymatic GmbH at Am Hauptbahnhof 6, 53111 Bonn, Germany, led by managing directors Tobias Hagemann and Sebastian Stenzel, and describes its work as digital self-defense for everyone. The software is open source and independently audited, was an awardee of the CeBIT Innovation Award 2016 for Usable Security and Privacy, and a 2025 press release sets out a post-quantum roadmap.
