Business overview

Ghostery is a privacy tool for browsers, made by Ghostery GmbH in Munich. The core product is a tracker and ad blocker extension for desktop and mobile browsers: it watches the servers a page calls, matches them against its tracker library and stops the request leaving the browser, rather than only refusing cookies. Alongside blocking it hides banner and video ads and sponsored content, replaces identifying values with random ones so trackers cannot build a profile, and offers Never-Consent, which rejects non-essential tracking cookies automatically and sends opt-out signals. The source code is public.

The tracker library holds over 5,000 trackers from more than 3,000 companies and is updated continually, published as WhoTracks.Me, a database Ghostery says is the largest of its kind and which feeds the blocking itself. The company counts over 100 million downloads across platforms and more than 15 years of work on privacy; the extension runs on all major browsers on desktop and mobile. Blocking, tracker control and consent handling are free and funded by optional monthly, yearly or one-off donations from users in its Contributor programme and by companies that rely on the tools. It also publishes Privacy Digest, a fortnightly newsletter.

Ghostery GmbH is registered at Arabellastraße 23 in Munich and owns and operates the site. Its FAQ records that the brand and products belonged to Evidon, Inc. from 2009 to 2017 before being acquired by Cliqz GmbH in 2017, operating as Ghostery GmbH since. The company says it does not share collected data with third parties, and user accounts were removed on 1 October 2025, so what it does collect is not tied to an account.

Value proposition

Ghostery blocks the request before it leaves the browser, so trackers never receive the page call at all - a different thing from blocking cookies, which still lets the browser talk to the tracker.
