Proton VPN

Proton VPN is a virtual private network service run from Switzerland by Proton AG. Its clients are open source and cover ten platforms, tunnelling traffic over WireGuard or OpenVPN and encrypting it with AES-256 or ChaCha20. A kill switch and always-on mode cut the connection if the tunnel drops, so traffic does not fall back to the open internet.

The network runs 20,000+ servers in more than 140 countries. Apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chrome, Firefox, Chromebook, Android TV and Fire TV, and paid subscriptions connect up to 10 devices at once. The free tier carries no ads and no data limit and keeps the same no-logs policy as the paid plans. DNS-level blocking removes ads, trackers and malware sites before they load, VPN Accelerator is claimed to lift speeds by up to 400%, and streaming platforms are supported on paid plans.

Proton VPN is one product in the Proton suite, alongside encrypted mail, calendar, drive and password manager, and shares its Swiss jurisdiction and openly published no-logs audits. Proton launched in 2014 after a crowdfunding campaign that raised over $500,000 from more than 10,000 people, and is run by Proton AG in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, under a non-profit foundation as primary shareholder, with no venture capital investors.
