G DATA CyberDefense AG is a German IT security vendor based in Bochum. It sells two overlapping ranges: antivirus and internet security packages for home users (Internet Security, Total Security, a VPN and Mobile Security, for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS), and security products and services for organisations - endpoint security, XDR, a managed SOC, security awareness training with phishing simulations, an incident response retainer and penetration tests. Development, hosting and support all sit in Germany, and the company makes that its main differentiator: research and software development take place exclusively in Germany, under a no-backdoor guarantee it says extends to government agencies.

The portfolio is built around prevention, detection and help after an incident, and is aimed at small, mid-sized and large businesses as well as private customers. G DATA says over 500 employees in Germany look after those customers, including critical infrastructure such as hospitals and airports, alongside millions of private users worldwide. Its information security management system is certified to ISO 27001:2022. Customers it names publicly include the bookseller Thalia, the city of Hamm and Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and it publishes an annual German-language report of cybersecurity statistics.

The company was founded in 1985 as a garage startup by Andreas Lüning and Kai Figge, and released what it calls the world's first antivirus software in 1987. Both founders are still on the board, Kai Figge as a board member and Andreas Lüning as CEO. Every department works from the Bochum campus, so service and support sit next to the development team, and the software is proprietary and vendor-hosted rather than something a customer runs on its own infrastructure.
