Business overview

NordVPN is a subscription VPN service distributed as desktop and mobile apps, plus browser proxy extensions. It routes a device's internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server the user picks, replacing the originating IP address and apparent location. The client connects over NordLynx, NordVPN's own lightweight protocol, alongside standard tunnelling options. Beyond the tunnel, the app bundles a next-generation antivirus that inspects links, sites and downloaded files, and blocks ads and trackers.

The server network covers more than 9,500 servers in over 224 locations. One subscription allows up to 10 simultaneous device connections, and the service can be installed on a Wi-Fi router to cover a whole home network. Dark Web Monitor watches underground marketplaces for leaked credentials and personal data and alerts the account holder. NordVPN states that it pioneered independent no-log audits in the VPN market, submits its apps to recurring third-party testing, publishes the results through a trust centre, and is a founding member of the VPN Trust Initiative.

NordVPN launched in 2012, starting from a single prototype server shared among its founders before opening to the public. It is owned by Nord Security, which also runs NordLayer, NordPass, Saily and NordStellar. The parent company is headquartered in Lithuania and the group keeps offices in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Switzerland and Panama. The service is proprietary and hosted by the vendor, with no self-hosted or open-source version.
