Business overview

Nextcloud is an open-source content collaboration platform that an organisation installs on servers it controls instead of renting file storage from a cloud provider. It ships as Nextcloud Hub, a single platform bundling Nextcloud Files (sync and share), Talk (chat and video calls), Groupware (calendar, contacts, mail), Office (collaborative document editing), Assistant (an on-premises AI assistant) and Flow (workflow automation). Desktop, mobile and web clients connect to your own instance, so the data stays on infrastructure you run.

Adoption is unusually broad for a self-hosted product: Nextcloud counts over 400,000 deployments and tens of millions of users at thousands of organisations, scaling from a Raspberry Pi serving two users to clustered installations at major hosting providers. Published case studies name Germany's Federal Information Technology Centre (ITZBund), Stadtsparkasse München and Deutsche Telekom. Security features include server-side encryption, end-to-end client-side encryption, brute-force protection, file access control, audit logging and a $10,000 security bug bounty. Enterprise subscriptions start at EUR 71.29 per user per year at 100 users.

Nextcloud GmbH was founded in June 2016 by Frank Karlitschek and Niels Mache and is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, with its main office in Berlin. The code is 100% open source under the AGPL, with no open-core edition or proprietary extensions, so the same software can be self-hosted or run by a provider you choose. It positions itself as the European, sovereign alternative to Microsoft 365, Google Drive and Dropbox, and in November 2025 pledged EUR 250 million of investment in digital sovereignty by 2030.

Value proposition

Choose Nextcloud when files, chat, calendar and document editing all have to run on your own servers: one AGPL codebase covers the whole stack, so compliance and exit costs stop depending on a cloud vendor.
