Business overview

Filen is a cloud storage service built around zero-knowledge, client-side encryption: files are encrypted on the device with AES-256-GCM before they are uploaded and the decryption keys stay in the user's control, so the operator cannot read what is stored. Clients exist for desktop, mobile and the web, alongside a headless command-line tool and SDKs for TypeScript, Rust and Go.

Alongside plain sync it offers five sync modes for backup and device-to-device work, Smart Sync for access without waiting for a full download, and a network drive mode that mounts the encrypted cloud as a local disk. Encrypted notes and end-to-end encrypted chat cover collaboration. Because WebDAV and S3 normally cannot sit on top of fully encrypted storage, Filen ships tooling to run a self-hosted WebDAV or S3 endpoint over it. The company says more than two million people have used its products and that over 67 PiB of data sits on its own servers, with no cap on upload or download speed.

Filen is run by Filen Cloud Dienste UG (haftungsbeschränkt) in Recklinghausen, Germany. The servers are the company's own, held in Tier III-IV colocation data centres in Germany that it says are ISO 27001 certified, under German and EU data protection rules. Its desktop, mobile and web clients are published under the AGPL v3, and it states that it has no outside financiers.

Value proposition

The clients are AGPL v3 open source and encryption is AES-256-GCM on the device, so you can read the code that holds your keys instead of trusting a closed client from a provider that can see your files.
