Business overview

SumUp sells card readers and point-of-sale tools to small merchants: a business can take payments on a card reader or straight from a phone with Tap to Pay in the SumUp Business app. The hardware line runs from the phone-pairing Solo Lite to the standalone Solo and up to the handheld Terminal, a touchscreen device with a built-in receipt printer for busier venues. Around the readers sit a business account, invoicing, expense management and loyalty features, plus a personal account and card for consumers.

UK pricing is pay-as-you-go at 1.69% per card-reader transaction with no monthly fee, or Payments Plus at £19 a month (£189 a year) for 0.99% on in-person domestic consumer cards; international, corporate and premium cards stay at 1.69%, and online payments cost 2.50%. Takings reach the Business Account the next day at 7am, including weekends and bank holidays. The readers accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, and the hardware carries PCI PTS 4.0, EMV Level 1 and 2, and ISO 9001:2015 certification.

SumUp started in 2012 and now says more than 4 million businesses use its tools, with Canada counted as its 38th market. Its UK entity, SumUp Payments Limited, is registered in London, and the company describes a 3,000-strong team spread over 26 offices and more than 90 nationalities. It has been a member of 1% for the Planet since 2021.
