Business overview

TomTom builds maps and location technology that other companies embed in their own products. Its current platform, TomTom Orbis Maps, is assembled from open data — the Overture Maps Foundation and OpenStreetMap — merged with TomTom's own proprietary layers for points of interest, routing, traffic and driver assistance, then validated and enriched by an AI-native mapping pipeline. Customers reach it through APIs for map display, search, geocoding, routing and traffic, through navigation SDKs for Android and iOS, and through uncompiled map content for web, mobile, embedded and automotive platforms; a map editor called Map Maker handles restyling, and the developer portal publishes open source MCP servers that give AI applications access to location data.

Orbis covers more than 235 countries and territories. The API catalogue is priced per request with a free monthly allowance on each product and no credit card to start: 200,000 requests a month for vector and raster tile display, 20,000 for geocoding, reverse geocoding and routing, 10,000 for place suggestions, and 2,500 for matrix routing, traffic incidents and EV range calculation. Traffic flow, incidents and analytics are sold on the same platform, and a separate Orbis line supplies real-time road data for automated driving and ADAS.

TomTom is based in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and is a proprietary, vendor-hosted platform rather than something a customer can self-host. The company describes a team of 3,300 people and around 30 years in the field, having started with consumer navigation devices before licensing map data and location technology to businesses. It sells mainly to public sector, automotive, and fleet and logistics customers.
