Business overview

STACKIT is a European public cloud sold directly to businesses. Virtual machines, storage, managed databases, Kubernetes and data/AI services are booked self-service in the STACKIT Portal and billed by consumption, and they run on data centres the operator builds itself rather than resold capacity. The platform services around it lean on open-source software: Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Foundry, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL Server, Redis, OpenSearch, RabbitMQ, a container registry, Git hosting, and key and secrets management. Confidential Server and Confidential Kubernetes cover workloads that must be verifiably shielded from third-party access, and colocation in the same facilities plus cloud consulting are sold alongside the self-service products.

STACKIT runs seven data centres in Europe, with more under construction, and hosts customer data only in Germany and Austria. Support runs 24/7. Referenced customers and partners include FC Bayern Munich, VfB Stuttgart and Datagroup; the platform is the cloud foundation for the German federal government's AI platform, holds a framework agreement with the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, and is being extended to the Dutch market with KPN. RISE with SAP, Zscaler, Celonis and Snowflake workloads run on it.

STACKIT is the cloud provider of Schwarz Digits, the IT and digital arm of the Schwarz Group, the retail group behind Lidl and Kaufland. The cloud was launched in 2018 to run the group's own IT, opened to external customers in 2022, and moved into its own legal entity, STACKIT GmbH & Co. KG, in 2024; the team is based in Neckarsulm in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The service is proprietary and vendor-operated, pitched at regulated sectors: public sector, healthcare, financial services, retail and manufacturing.

Value proposition

Compute and data stay in data centres the vendor runs in Germany and Austria, under a provider headquartered in Germany rather than branch operations of a US group - which answers EU data-residency and public-procurement reviews that AWS or Azure need extra contractual work to satisfy.
